Guillermo del Toro on his scrapped plans for Justice League Dark

Justice League Dark, Guillermo del Toro

We all love Guillermo del Toro, but we also know that Guillermo del Toro isn’t always able to follow through on some of the projects he’s so passionate about. One of those projects was Justice League Dark, which Guillermo del Toro was reported to have been working on nearly a decade ago.

Guillermo del Toro spoke about the Justice League Dark movie several times over the years before he stepped down from the project and was replaced by Doug Liman (Chaos Walking). Although he’s no longer involved, del Toro recently spoke with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to spill a few details on what his Justice League Dark movie would have been.

I took a little bit of the opening of the Alan Moore Constantine. And I took the dynamics between [Abby Arcane] and Swamp Thing, and I took the sort of revelatory moments when Deadman gets into a body, how he would experience the consciousness of that being. And one of my all-time favourites is the demon Etrigan. I love that character.

Guillermo del Toro continued, “Zatanna is really, for me, another character that is really effortlessly powerful and interesting. So trying to mix that with Klarion the Witch Boy…I was [always] a DC guy.” After replacing Guillermo del Toro on Justice League Dark, Doug Liman wound up departing as well and the project will now take the form of a movie and TV franchise developed by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company.

Guillermo del Toro’s latest film is Nightmare Alley, a psychological thriller starring Bradley Cooper as an ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words, but he’s given a run for his money when he hooks up with a female psychiatrist played by Cate Blanchett who is even more dangerous than he is. The film debuted in theaters earlier this month and you can check out a review from our own JimmyO right here.
